Lymphoedema

Lymphoedema is a long-term swelling caused by problems with the lymphatic system. It can develop after cancer or lymph node surgery, after infection or trauma, or it can be present from birth.

What is lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema is a long-term swelling caused by problems with the lymphatic system. It can develop after cancer or lymph node surgery, after infection or trauma, or it can be present from birth. Swelling can affect the arm, leg, face, trunk, or groin. It can cause discomfort, heaviness, skin changes, and, in some people, repeated infections. While it cannot be fully cured, good conservative treatments (such as compression, massage, skin care, and exercise) can reduce symptoms and help prevent progression. However, some patients continue to have symptoms even with good conservative care. Specialist surgery can offer meaningful and lasting improvement when tailored to the individual and delivered as part of a wider care plan.

About the Great North Lymphatic Centre (GNLC)

GNLC is founded and led by consultant plastic surgeons with extensive NHS experience in reconstructive microsurgery and lymphatic supermicrosurgery. This consultant-led service provides a highly personalised assessment pathway for people living with lymphoedema of the limbs, face, or trunk, using advanced imaging and evidence-based techniques to guide each treatment plan.

At The Beverley Hospital, GNLC provides assessment, indocyanine-green (ICG) lymphography, and a comprehensive set of surgical options for lymphoedema. We work with care, clarity, and a commitment to long-term outcomes.

What we offer

Every patient has a consultation to confirm the cause, pattern, and stage of lymphoedema. If indicated, we arrange ICG lymphography to map lymph flow and help decide the most suitable treatment.

Depending on your case, options may include:

Lymphaticovenous anastomosis (LVA)

connecting working lymphatic vessels to nearby small veins to create new drainage routes using supermicrosurgical techniques.

Vascularised lymph node or vessel transfer (VLNT / VLVT)

bringing healthy lymphatic tissue to the lymphoedema area when native lymphatics are very damaged.

Selective liposuction or debulking

reducing established fibrofatty tissues in long-standing lymphoedema to reduce volume, improve contour, and comfort.

Surgery aims to reduce swelling, soften tissues, improve limb contour, and make compression therapy more effective.  Results vary between individuals and depend on the underlying cause, disease stage, lymphatic anatomy, and adherence to long-term care. Not every patient will need surgery; some will do better with optimised conservative treatment. We will explain this clearly if it applies to you.

Who it may help

  • Persistent secondary lymphoedema following cancer treatment (chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or surgery)
  • Lymphoedema developing after trauma or repeated infections
  • Primary or congenital lymphoedema
  • Complex or localised lymphoedema (face, trunk, genital) not responding to conservative therapy

What to expect

  • Enquiry/self-referral for a GNLC appointment
  • Initial consultation with a detailed assessment to understand your history, current symptoms, and previous treatments.
  • ICG lymphography (if needed) to offer real-time imaging of your lymphatic flow to help select the most effective treatment.
