Prominent ear correction (Pinnaplasty / Otoplasty)

Having the ears pinned back is a procedure that reduces the prominence of the ears from the frontal view and can have an enormous effect on your confidence to expose your ears to general view.

Overview of the procedure

The procedure for pinning back the ears aims to diminish their visibility from the front, significantly boosting confidence in revealing ears in public view. This surgery is usually performed under local anaesthetic for adults, and involves a discreet incision made behind the ear. Specific sutures are then placed in this area to effect the pulling back of the ears.

Prominent ears can arise from various factors, but the use of strong sutures through a concealed incision is generally effective in minimising their prominence. During the procedure, we encourage patients to use a mirror to ensure their satisfaction with the results as we adjust the ears.

Following surgery, we commonly recommend that patients wear a soft headband for the initial two weeks to protect the ears, transitioning to nightly use during sleep for an additional six weeks or so.

Can I wash my face after?

After your surgery, it is safe to wash and shower as you usually would. We dress the scar behind the ear with a waterproof glue and dissolving sutures on the inside of the skin. However, it is important to avoid scrubbing your face or drying it vigorously with a towel.

What are the main complications?

In very uncommon circumstances patients can have the ears come back into the undesirable position. Also very uncommonly many years after surgery the permanent stitches on the inside can come to the surface of the skin and need removing.

How long does it last?

Pinnaplasty should be a lifelong result of keeping the ears in a pinned back position.
