Breast Reduction

Overly large breasts may lead to both physical strain and emotional challenges. Breast reduction surgery helps relieve this burden by removing excess tissue, allowing you to enjoy greater comfort, confidence, and quality of life.

Overview of the procedure

Breast reduction is often considered to provide the greatest satisfaction for many of our patients. Breast reduction not only revitalises the breasts but also offers significant functional advantages, such as relieving back, neck and shoulder pain, and should not be viewed solely as a cosmetic enhancement.

The dimensions of your breasts are significantly determined by genetic factors and hormonal fluctuations within the body. By adolescence breasts are typically fully developed, around the ages of 17 or 18. However, factors such as ageing, weight gain, and pregnancy can alter the size, shape, and fullness of your breasts as you progress through different life stages. Menopause can also play a role in changing breast size – as oestrogen levels decline and milk gland tissue is gradually replaced by fat, the breasts may appear larger and fuller.

It’s important to note that breast reduction surgery is not solely intended for aesthetic improvements, it can also be life-changing. Having disproportionately large and heavy breasts can result in various health complications that affect your work and daily activities. The procedure effectively addresses both physical and psychological challenges, enhancing your self-esteem and overall quality of life.

Benefits of breast reduction surgery

Relief from Discomfort

Breast reduction surgery can provide significant relief from chronic pain in the back, shoulders, and neck, which are often exacerbated by larger breasts. Many patients experience an improvement in their posture following the procedure, as the reduction in breast size alleviates the strain on the spine and surrounding muscles. This not only enhances physical comfort but also contributes to a more aligned and balanced posture.

Reduced Skin Irritation

Patients often find that breast reduction surgery reduces the grooves left by bra straps on their shoulders, leading to a more comfortable experience when wearing supportive garments. This improvement can greatly enhance day-to-day comfort, making tasks that involve prolonged periods of wearing a bra much more manageable.

Body Confidence

Breast reduction surgery can help eliminate unwanted attention often directed towards larger breasts, and also instils a renewed sense of confidence in patients. This combination of physical comfort and enhanced self-assurance contributes to a more fulfilling and enjoyable life experience.

Active Lifestyle and Clothing Options

You may find it easier to engage in sports and other physical activities, as the reduction in breast size allows for greater freedom of movement. Additionally, patients report a newfound ease in finding suitable clothing, bras, and swimwear that fit well and enhance their appearance.

Breast Augmentation Preparation

Preparing for Your Breast Surgery

During the procedure, your surgeon will reposition your nipples to achieve a balanced and aesthetically pleasing outcome in relation to your reduced breast size. The surgery typically lasts between 1 to 3 hours, and you may be required to remain in the hospital overnight for observation.

Your initial follow-up appointment is set for one week post-surgery. Subsequently, your surgeon will conduct regular check-ups during the first six weeks to monitor your recovery and ensure it proceeds safely and effectively.

Our breast reduction technique

This surgical procedure entails repositioning the nipple and excising surplus fat, tissue, and skin. The remaining breast tissue is then reshaped to form a new breast contour that is more harmonious with your body and aligned with your lifestyle needs.

With extensive experience our specialist breast surgeons at Beverley Clinic have refined multiple techniques for breast reduction to ensure the best result. During your pre-operative consultations, we will assess your breasts and body shape to determine the most suitable surgical method that meets your expectations.

The Circumareolar Reduction

A circumareolar reduction will provide modest results, suitable for more minor reduction surgeries where minimal tissue is removed. The only incisions required with this technique are around the areolas.

The Vertical Pattern Reduction

This vertical technique is suitable for moderate breast reductions, including an incision around the areola, travelling towards the bottom of the breast.

The Anchor Or Inverted T Reduction

The inverted T reduction is the most common technique, suitable for women with very large breasts, requiring more breast fat and tissue removal. This features an incision around the areola, travelling towards the bottom of the breast and horizontally along the breast crease.

Frequently asked questions

Our FAQs section provides comprehensive answers to the most common inquiries regarding our procedures, helping you to make informed decisions and gain clarity on what to expect throughout your journey at Beverley Clinic.

Where are the scars placed and how long till I’m healed?

The scars are typically in an anchor shape, around the areolar, and down to the inframammary crease and then along the crease to varying lengths (which are still typically hidden). Most patients are dressing free between 2-3 weeks and the dressings are shower proof so you can self care as normal in the shower.

What are the main risks?

Occasionally the point at which all the scars meet under the breast the wound can separate slightly which needs dressings for a few more days. When the breast is moulded back into a round shape small areas of your fat under the skin can become firm as it heals – this generally settles over a few months and rarely is visible with the naked eye. One side heals quicker and softens quicker than the other. Occasionally the nipples can be numb for a period, but rarely forever.

When can I wear a proper bra?

We generally advise 8 weeks in a sports bra and then the swelling will have sufficiently settled to allow you to get measured for a proper bra.

Can I choose the bra size I want to be?

It is not possible to guarantee a breast size because cup size is dependent on many variables, and patients can get three different cup sizes from three shops that measure. Therefore given that variability, it is best not to focus on cup size.

Is it better to lose weight or get a breast reduction?

If you are planning to lose weight, it is advisable to do so before undergoing breast reduction to prevent sagging and changes in body shape after weight loss. If you are at a healthy weight but are dissatisfied with the size of your breasts, then breast reduction surgery might be a suitable option for you.

How long is breast reduction surgery recovery?

This operation is typically carried out on an outpatient basis, allowing you to return home the same day to recover. Some individuals might need to stay overnight at the hospital, but we will explain this during your initial consultations, depending on the surgery’s complexity.

Recovery can take up to six weeks, during which you should avoid vigorous exercise and heavy lifting. The swelling, bruising, and discomfort will gradually decrease, but the final results may become apparent after six to twelve months.

It is advisable to take a two-week break from work to aid your recovery post-surgery. During this period, ensure you have support with any dependants or responsibilities outside of work, enabling you to focus on resting and recuperating.

Can you get a breast reduction on the NHS?

Breast reduction surgery may be available through the NHS if the size of your breasts is causing significant psychological distress. If you wish to reduce your breast size for cosmetic reasons, you will need to arrange and pay for the procedure privately.

How much is a breast reduction in the UK?

The cost of breast reduction surgery depends on your cosmetic goals and the technique needed to achieve your desired outcome. As procedures at Beverley Clinic are customised to each person, it is important to book a consultation to get an accurate estimate and expert advice.

Will I have scars following breast reduction surgery?

Because of the nature of the procedure, scars are unavoidable as access beneath the skin is necessary to remove excess breast tissue and fat. A small cut around the areola and possibly along the crease under the breast will be needed.

Careful management during your recovery can help reduce the chance of scars stretching and make them less noticeable. Additionally, strong evidence supports the benefit of massaging scar tissue in the weeks following the surgery. This, combined with the application of silicone gel, helps keep your breasts hydrated during recovery, resulting in healthy outcomes with minimal scarring.

How long do results from breast reduction surgery last?

The results of your breast reduction are intended to be long-lasting. However, factors like pregnancy, significant weight gain, and hormone changes can affect the appearance of your breasts in the future. As you age, the supportive structure of your skin can weaken and lose elasticity, which can lead to a drooping appearance. At this point, you might think about a breast lift to elevate and reshape your natural breasts.

At what age can breast reduction surgery be done?

Breast development in young women typically begins between the ages of 8 and 13, reaching full maturity by 17 or 18. Sometimes, breasts may continue to increase in size into the early twenties. Therefore, it is important to wait until breast growth has completely stopped before considering breast reduction surgery.

How many cups do you go down with a breast reduction?

There is no strict limit to how much reduction can be achieved; it is primarily guided by personal preferences. Many women choose to go down by one or two sizes to ease the issues that come with having larger breasts.

In your face-to-face meetings, we will assess your body proportions and review any reference photos you bring along. This will help determine a suitable cup size for your physique. Based on this, the required amount of breast tissue and fat to be removed will be planned, ensuring the results align with both your expectations and visual goals.

What are the risks of breast reduction surgery?

Like any surgical procedure, breast reduction comes with potential risks and complications:

Scarring: Our surgeons will aim to keep scarring to a minimum. However, cuts are necessary to access breast tissue, and scarring can vary from person to person, depending on individual healing.

Uneven breasts: After the procedure, one breast might heal differently than the other, which can result in uneven appearance.

Change in nipple and breast sensation: The nerves in the nipples and breast may be impacted during the surgery, which can cause reduced sensitivity or numbness.

Difficulty breastfeeding: The procedure may disrupt milk-producing tissue, making breastfeeding challenging in the future. If you plan to have children, please discuss this with us to find the most suitable approach.
